Why there are two fees

A first-time passport has two parts: a $130 application fee that goes to the State Department, and a $35 execution (acceptance) fee paid to the facility that verifies your identity in person — usually a post office or clerk of court.

These are often paid separately: the application fee by check or card to the State Department, and the $35 execution fee directly to the acceptance facility.

Renewal is cheaper than a new passport

If your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 or older, is undamaged, and you still have it, you can usually renew by mail with Form DS-82 — which skips the $35 execution fee, dropping the cost to $130.

First-time applicants, children, and anyone replacing a lost or stolen passport must apply in person and pay the execution fee.

Paying for speed

Standard processing takes several weeks. Expedited service adds $60 and shortens that significantly, and you can add 1–3 day delivery for $22.05 to get the finished book back faster.

If you're traveling within days, you'll need an in-person appointment at a passport agency or a registered expediting service, which costs more but turns it around in as little as 24–72 hours.
